When at the end of February 2022 Russia invaded Ukraine volunteers from all over the world came to the assistance of the Ukrainians. Amongst them also Boris, former military and highly worried by the potential consequences if the Russian aggressor would be successful. After pausing his life in Belgium Boris entered Ukraine in the 3th week of the war and joined the International Legion. 3 months later the vehicle he was in was struck a mine resulting in a bilateral above knee amputation. Deeply motivated to get back on his feet he has made a swift recovery and is currently testing out prosthetic legs. While the technological solutions exist to help Boris regain a lot of his quality of life he is facing massive costs:
- Prosthetics: Microprocessor knee, socket to fit the stumps, prosthetic foot/ankle. ~ € 65 000 each (= € 130 000 total), to be renewed every 6 year.
- Adapted Car: Fully automatic, adapted hand controlled gas/break lever, safety systems. ~€30 000
- Home renovations: Adapted kitchen, bathroom, driveway, sliding doors, various other adaptations and adjustments. €200 000.
With the medical costs and the lack of income having drained most of his savings over the last year we are launching this fundraiser in the hope of finding the means to give Boris some of his life back.
